Dental implants in Castalla
General information. Always follow your dentist's instructions.
Dental implants at Clínica Dental Castalla replace missing teeth with an artificial root placed in the bone, onto which a crown or bridge is fixed. Before deciding, the dentist assesses your mouth with imaging. We are in the centre of Castalla; to book an appointment, call us or send us a WhatsApp message.
Replace lost teeth and chew in complete comfort again.
A dental implant is a piece, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the bone of the lower or upper jaw and acts as the root of the missing tooth. Once it has integrated with the bone, the prosthesis is fitted on top: a crown for a single tooth, or a bridge or denture when several are missing.
Replacing a missing tooth helps you chew comfortably and helps stop neighbouring teeth from drifting into the gap. Also, unlike a conventional bridge, an implant does not need to rest on the teeth next to it. Even so, not everyone is a candidate at any given time, which is why the first step is an assessment.
To plan the treatment, the dentist studies the amount and quality of the bone, the state of the gums and your general health. At the clinic we have a 3D CT scanner, which gives a three-dimensional image of the bone in detail and helps plan where and how to place each implant.
Treatment is usually done in stages. First the implant is placed under local anaesthetic; then it is left for a while to integrate with the bone, and finally the permanent prosthesis is fitted. How long each stage takes depends on each case, and the dentist will explain it in your treatment plan.
Some factors can affect the result, such as smoking, certain conditions or hygiene. It is important to mention them at the appointment. Afterwards, implants need the same care as natural teeth: brushing, cleaning between the teeth and check-ups. In «Your visit» you will find the recommended aftercare following an implant.
Treatments included
Implants
An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It is placed in the bone under local anaesthetic and, once it has integrated, the crown you see in the mouth is attached to it. It can replace a single tooth or support several. After the surgery it is common to notice some swelling or discomfort for a few days, which can usually be managed by following the dentist's instructions. For the implant to stay in good condition, daily hygiene and check-ups are essential.
Dental bridge
A dental bridge replaces one or more teeth in a row with a fixed piece that rests on its ends. Those supports can be the neighbouring teeth or implants. When it rests on implants, there is no need to prepare the teeth next to the gap. To keep it clean you also need to reach under the piece, where food can collect; the dentist will show you how. The dentist will explain whether a bridge on teeth, on implants or another option suits your case.
Bone graft
When a tooth is lost, the bone in that area can gradually shrink. If there is not enough bone to place an implant, it can sometimes be regenerated with a bone graft, which adds material so that the bone grows and the implant has something to hold on to. Depending on the case, the graft is done before placing the implant or in the same procedure. The 3D CT scan helps assess whether it is needed and how much bone is available.
Conscious sedation
Conscious sedation helps people who feel afraid or nervous about the dentist go through treatment more calmly. The patient is relaxed but awake, can respond and breathes on their own, unlike under general anaesthesia. It is combined with local anaesthetic in the area. It is not needed in every case: the dentist will discuss with you whether it is suitable and give you the instructions to follow before and after.

Frequently asked questions
Does getting an implant hurt?
It is placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Afterwards some discomfort or swelling for a few days is common.
Can anyone have an implant?
It depends on the bone, the gums and your general health. That is why an assessment with imaging is done first, and in some cases a bone graft is needed.
Can I ask for sedation if I am afraid of the dentist?
Yes, the clinic offers conscious sedation. The dentist will discuss with you whether it is suitable in your case and explain how to prepare.
How do I look after an implant?
Like a natural tooth: brushing, cleaning between the teeth and check-ups. In «Your visit» you will find the instructions for the first days after it is placed.
