What counts as a dental emergency
A dental emergency is any mouth problem that should not be left for later because it causes a lot of pain, may get worse or puts a tooth at risk. Common examples are severe toothache that does not ease, swelling of the face or gum, a tooth that is broken or loose after a knock, a tooth that has been knocked out completely, bleeding that does not stop after an extraction, or a broken crown or denture that makes it hard to eat or speak normally.
Other problems, such as slight sensitivity to cold or a filling that has fallen out without pain, can usually wait for a normal appointment, although it is worth booking one soon. If you are unsure, call and you will be advised.
Some situations need urgent medical care, not just dental care: swelling that spreads towards the eye or neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing, a high fever or a hard knock to the head. In those cases call 112 or go to the hospital emergency department.
What to do on your way
If a tooth has been knocked out completely, hold it by the crown, the part you see when you smile, without touching the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly with water without scrubbing it. Ideally carry it in milk or saline, or inside the mouth between the cheek and the teeth if the person can do so without risk of swallowing it. Call as soon as possible: the sooner it is seen to, the better the chances of saving it.
If a piece of tooth has broken off, keep it if you find it and rinse your mouth with lukewarm water. If there is bleeding, press on the area with a clean piece of gauze for a while, without lifting it to look. For swelling, a cold pack on the outside of the face, wrapped in a cloth, applied for short periods may help; avoid heat.
If you are in pain, do not put medicines directly on the gum or tooth, as they can irritate the area. If you take a painkiller, follow the leaflet or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist, and mention what you have taken at the appointment. Avoid chewing on the affected side and very cold, very hot or hard foods.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do if a tooth has been knocked out?
Hold it by the crown without touching the root, rinse it briefly with water if it is dirty and carry it in milk or saline. Call straight away: the sooner it is seen to, the better the chances of saving it.
What should I do if a back tooth has broken but does not hurt?
Even if it does not hurt, it is worth having it checked soon, because the tooth is weaker and may break further or let decay in. Book an appointment and, in the meantime, avoid chewing on that side.
What should I do if a crown or filling has come out?
Keep the piece if you find it and do not try to stick it back with household glue. Book an appointment soon and, in the meantime, avoid chewing on that side and very cold or very hot foods if you notice sensitivity.
