Precise, safe surgery to solve complex cases and protect your oral health.

Oral surgery covers procedures on the teeth, gums and bone of the mouth, such as removing a tooth that cannot be kept or a wisdom tooth that is causing problems. It may feel daunting, but many of these procedures are routine at the clinic and are usually done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure.

Before any procedure, the dentist studies the case. At the clinic we have digital diagnosis, such as panoramic X-rays and 3D CT scans, which show the position of the teeth and roots, the bone and nearby structures. With that information, the dentist decides how to proceed and will explain what to expect before, during and after.

It is important to mention your general health, any medicines you take and any allergies at the appointment, because they can affect how the procedure is prepared and the aftercare. If you feel afraid of the treatment, say so too: the clinic offers conscious sedation for people who find the dentist difficult.

After a procedure it is common to notice some swelling or discomfort for a few days. Following the dentist's instructions helps the area heal well: taking care with what you eat, keeping up gentle hygiene and not smoking are some of the general recommendations. If bleeding does not stop, you have a fever or the pain gets worse, it is worth calling the clinic.

In «Your visit» you will find the recommended aftercare following an extraction, to read calmly at home.

Treatments included

Extractions

An extraction removes a tooth that cannot be kept, for example because of very advanced decay, a fracture, gum disease or because there is not enough room in the arch. Whenever possible the aim is to keep the tooth, and an extraction is considered when there is no other reasonable alternative. It is done under local anaesthetic. Afterwards a blood clot forms in the socket, and it needs protecting during the first days by following the dentist's instructions.

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through and often do not have enough room. They can stay inside the bone or come through crooked, and in some cases they cause gum inflammation, pain or problems with the neighbouring teeth. Not all wisdom teeth need to come out: the dentist assesses their position with imaging and whether they cause or may cause problems. When it is advisable to remove them, the procedure is usually a little more complex than a standard extraction, and some swelling for a few days is common.

Pre-surgical orthodontics

In some cases, orthodontics and oral surgery are coordinated. Pre-surgical orthodontics prepares the position of the teeth before a procedure, for example to help a tooth that has not come through move into place, or to get the mouth ready before another treatment. Each case needs a detailed study. The dentist will explain whether your situation requires it and how the different stages of treatment would be coordinated.

Gum graft

A gum graft is used when the gum has receded and leaves part of the tooth root exposed. Tissue is placed in the area to cover the root or strengthen the gum, which can help reduce sensitivity and protect the tooth. It is done under local anaesthetic. During the following days it is worth looking after the area gently and following the dentist's instructions on hygiene and diet.

In general yes, following the precautions for the first days that the dentist gives you. In «Your visit» you will find the recommended aftercare following an extraction.
