Restore how your mouth works and looks.

Losing a tooth is not just about appearance. The gap can make neighbouring teeth tilt, change the bite or make some foods harder to chew. Dental prostheses replace those teeth and give the mouth back its function and appearance.

There are many types of prostheses and the choice depends on each case: how many teeth are missing, where they are, the state of the gums and bone, and each person's preferences. In general there are two main groups: fixed prostheses, which are cemented or screwed in place and the patient does not take out, and removable ones, which can be taken out for cleaning.

Prostheses can also be supported by implants, which in some cases gives more stability. If it is an option for you, the dentist will explain it together with the other alternatives so that you can compare and decide with all the information.

Before designing a prosthesis, the mouth needs to be well understood: how it bites, the state of the remaining teeth and how much bone there is. As well as the examination, the clinic has digital diagnosis, such as an intraoral scanner, which records the shape of the teeth and mouth without impression paste in many cases. That record can later be used to design the prosthesis.

A prosthesis needs care to stay in good condition: daily cleaning, regular check-ups and, for removable ones, good care outside the mouth. Over time the gums and bone change, so it is normal for a prosthesis to need some adjustment. In «Your visit» you will find the recommended care for dentures.

Treatments included

Fixed denture

A fixed prosthesis stays attached in the mouth and the patient does not remove it. It includes crowns, which cover a badly damaged tooth to protect it, and bridges, which replace one or more teeth by resting on the neighbouring teeth or on implants. It usually feels similar to natural teeth and is cleaned with a toothbrush and interdental brushes or special floss. To fit it, the supporting teeth usually need to be prepared and a record of the mouth taken. The dentist will explain which option suits your case.

Removable denture

A removable prosthesis can be taken out and put back in. It can be complete, when it replaces all the teeth in one arch, or partial, when it replaces some teeth and is held by the remaining ones. It is common to need a period of adjustment to speak and chew comfortably with it, and for a sore spot to appear at first that is worth having checked. It is cleaned outside the mouth and, in general, it is recommended to take it out at night, although the dentist will give you the instructions for your case.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fixed and a removable prosthesis?

A fixed one is attached to the teeth or implants and does not come out. A removable one is taken out and put back in for cleaning. Which suits you depends on your mouth, and the dentist will explain the options.

Is it normal for new dentures to rub or feel uncomfortable?

It is common to need some time to adjust and for a sore spot to appear at first. If the discomfort does not improve, it is worth having the denture checked and adjusted.

Can a prosthesis be supported by implants?

Yes, in many cases fixed prostheses and some removable ones can be supported by implants. Whether it is possible depends on the bone and the health of the mouth, and the dentist will assess it.
