Dentures and prostheses
General information. Always follow your dentist's instructions.
The first few days
- It is normal for the denture to feel strange, for your speech to sound a little different or for you to produce more saliva. This usually passes within a few days.
- Start with soft food cut into small pieces, chewing on both sides at the same time.
- If it rubs and causes a sore spot, do not adjust it yourself: call us and we will adjust it.
Cleaning a removable denture
- Take it out and clean it after every meal with a brush and mild soap, not toothpaste, which scratches it.
- Clean it over a basin filled with water or over a towel, so it does not break if you drop it.
- Once a day you can use denture cleaning tablets.
At night
- Take it out to sleep, unless we have told you otherwise, and keep it in a glass of water.
- This lets your gums rest.
Your mouth
- Brush your gums, your tongue and any remaining teeth.
Fixed prostheses (crowns and bridges)
- Clean them like your own teeth, using special floss or interdental brushes under the bridge.
When to call us
- If it hurts, moves or has broken.
- If a sore appears that does not heal within a week.
- At least once a year, to have it checked.
- If you find it hard to swallow or breathe, or the swelling is spreading quickly, go to A&E or call 112.
