Root canal treatment
General information. Always follow your dentist's instructions.
The first few days
- It is normal for the tooth to be sensitive when you bite for a few days.
- Wait for the anaesthetic to wear off before eating.
- Take your medication exactly as we have told you.
Eating
- Do not chew with that tooth until it has been fully rebuilt: it could break.
- Chew on the other side and avoid hard foods.
Hygiene
- Brush and floss as normal, including that tooth.
After root canal treatment
- A tooth that has had root canal treatment is more fragile. It often needs a rebuild or a crown to protect it.
- Do not miss the appointment we have given you to finish the treatment.
When to call us
- If the pain gets worse instead of easing.
- If swelling appears on your face or gum.
- If the temporary filling falls out.
- If you find it hard to swallow or breathe, or the swelling is spreading quickly, go to A&E or call 112.
